Be it a vacation or market hustle, people need to go outside. Pollution and sun rays are becoming intense and it is very dangerous to go in sunlight without shielding our skin. Sunscreen comes to our rescue. It is an inevitable part of our daily skincare. To use any product, we should know the important facts about them. So here are a few prominent facts about sunscreen which everyone should know.

What Are The Benefits Of Sunscreen For Your Skin

Here are a few prominent facts about sunscreen which everyone should know.

  1. Protects our skin from UV rays

The UV rays are so strong and harmful to our body that they are capable of damaging our skin cells permanently. These are intense but not powerful enough to enter our body and hence, all the damage they cause is to our skin. The more time spent in the sunlight, the more the risk of getting skin diseases like skin cancer. Sunscreen shields our skin and becomes a barrier between our skin and UV rays. It has all the essential elements that absorb, spread, and even reflect the rays to some extent.
  1. Composition is different

People generally think that all the sunscreens are similar and function in the same way but it's not true. There are two types of sunscreen available in the market, viz physical and chemical. Physical sunscreen contains either Zinc Oxide (ZnO) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) and these reflect the sun rays. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens absorb the sun rays and then scatter them. As the name suggests, these contain a lot of chemicals in varied ratios that work together in shielding the skin.
  1. Use sunscreen generously

A small amount of sunscreen may not be able to protect the skin from sun rays as efficiently as it is supposed to. Skin protection depends a lot on various factors and the quantity applied to the skin is one of those. Hence, pea-sized sunscreen is not enough for coverage. For rough measurement, take the product horizontally on your first three fingers and apply it properly to your face and neck.
  1. Don't always run after maximum SPF

It is true about sunscreen that more the SPF it contains, the more duration it takes to damage the skin. It means that if our skin generally takes 10 minutes to burn in the sun, the SPF 20 sunscreen would protect the skin for roughly 200 minutes (20 times more and keep other things constant). But it doesn't hold well for the higher SPF sunscreens. The maximum protection sunscreen can give is 50 times the normal duration. Hence, sunscreens with more than 50 SPF are not recommended to use.
  1. Go for 'broad-spectrum' sunscreens

There are two types of harmful rays emitted by the Sun, i.e., UVA and UVB. Where UVA rays cause premature skin aging, UVB rays cause more harm to the skin like sunburn. Long exposure to either of the rays can cause skin cancer and broad-spectrum sunscreen protects the skin from both types of rays to some extent. Use the sunscreens with at least 30 SPF for better coverage.
  1. Look at the labeling

The companies can no longer mark sunscreens as 'sweatproof' or 'waterproof'. Instead, they should mark it as either 'water resistant' or 'very water resistant'. Sunscreens that protect the skin from water for 40 minutes are water resistant and the latter protects the skin for up to 80 minutes. Hence, sunscreen should be reapplied every two to three hours in case of sweating. Its efficacy is also hampered after its expiry.
